Christmas Traditions

I've been looking at various ideas for Christmas Traditions. Here are some good ones I've found so far.

We take the children to a nursing home with cookies and songs to share.

Our family sets up the manger scene on December 1st, but we place the wise men on the other side of the house. Every day as Christmas approaches, our children move the wise men closer to the manger. It's fun to see where the wise men appear each day as Christmas draws closer. I've found them staring back at me in the shower, on the way down the stairs, and in the flour canister!

Every night select a Christmas Card and pray together for the family that sent it.

Of course, Christmas would not be complete without a good Christmas story:
I remember this story as read by Paul Harvey. I believe that Grandpa Kyle sent a tape recording to our family in Alaska when we were little.

IMG_6567.jpgI have no idea what these crazy flies are called, but boy there sure were alot of them. You really have to click on the picture and view it full size to truely appreciate the number. The neighborhood spiders were happy. The second picture was the collection a spider caught on a tree trunk.
What bugs me most is that they make a big mess on my clothes, up my nose and in my teeth when I ride back and forth to work.

Last night the boys were throwing firecrackers and jumping jacks into the bonfire. Some fell right into the red hot coals and immediately exploded. Others, fell into similarly hot coals but took several minutes before they were overcome by the heat. The anticipation was as much fun as the bang. One or two that fell took more than an hour before succumbing. These did the best job of getting screams.

Also, last night a fault somewhere out of the Prospect Point Substation lit up the foggy rain-soaked sky in blue and orange for almost a second. I didn't see the actual arc, but the clocks began blinking in the house. On our longer-than-necessary-so-Tim-can-explore drive home we saw the amber fault indicators blinking away just outside the sub.

Rattlesnake!!

Bad RattlesnakeStinking Salmon
Yesterday, Laura and I went hiking with some friends at South Fork, a popular spot on a cool Sabbath afternoon, to take the edge off of potluck before dinner. A mile or two down the trail, the people walking in front of us (distant relates of Laura) started carrying on and jumping around, almost to the point of dancing. We thought that strange behavior for middle-aged Adventists, until we discovered the reason. They had stepped over a rattlesnake lying in the middle of the trail. On that hike we also saw Laura Gren with Conrad's family, I don't know if she saw the snake or not. By the way, the snake is now a good snake. But I took a picture first. Along the way, we also smelled dead salmon that swam up from the ocean to deposit caviar. I took a picture of him too. It was amazing to all of us that Salmon made it up that far. It may have something to do with limited Salmon fishing this year. We've never seen salmon there before.
